Iran has seized a UK-flagged oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz was a “legal measure”, said the spokesperson for Iran on Monday.

Ali Rabiei told sources in Tehran, “Seizing the British tanker was a legal measure by Iran. Iran confronted the ship (to ensure) the region’s security.”

On Friday, Iran has seized the Stena Impero oil tanker over allegations that it miserably failed to reply to distress calls and turned off its vehicle after hits a fishing boat.

It has further faced mounting calls to release the oil tanker and its crew members – 3 Russians, 18 Indian, 1 Filipino, and 1 Latvian.

While referring to the capture by the UK authorities of an Iran’s oil tanker on July 4 in the Mediterranean Sea, Al Rabiei said that “to all the countries that are calling on Iran to release the tanker, we ask them to tell Britain the same thing.”

More details are awaited.
