Shamima Begum, a UK teenager had joined ISIS in Syria but now wants to return home with her new-born baby, a lawyer of her family said. Britain has decided to strip citizenship from the teenager over security concern.
Tasnime Akunjee, the lawyer of Shamima’s family said on Twitter, “Family is very disappointed with the Home Office’s intention to have an order made depriving Shamima of her citizenship.”
“We are considering all legal avenues to challenge this decision,” he wrote.
According to the sources, the Home Office has sent a letter to Begum’s mother which she received on Tuesday, notifying the family of the decision, which it said Begum had the right to appeal.
Britain’s interior ministry, the Home Office did not give any response to a request for comment from AFP.
Shamima Begum, the 19-year-old teenager belonged to East London. In 2015 she along with her two classmates had joined ISIS in Syria. After the fight began in the east of Syria, she fled along with hundreds of other people to northeast Syria and took shelter in a refugee camp and she is still there.
At the weekend she gave birth to her child and urged the British authorities to show “compassion” by allowing her to raise the baby in Britain. She expressed no regret over having joined IS.
Before this two babies of her has died due to illness and malnutrition. Many European countries are facing the same dilemma whether to restrict jihadis from returning home over security concern or allow them to return.
