ANTANANARIVO – On Monday, June 11, 2018- Madagascar’s president called and announced the name of the new cabinet and promised free elections after the court ordered him to form a consensus government in an effort to end up the political crisis.

The cabinet includes allies with the three most powerful politicians on the Indian Ocean island: President Hery Rajaonarimampianina and another two of his predecessors named: Andry Rajoelina, seized power in a coup in 2009, and the man he ousted, Marc Ravalomanana.

The three of them, popularly known as the accountant, the DJ and the milkman by the locals in reference to their respective previous jobs, control all the three separate and often deeply divided political factions.

During the televised speech Rajaonarimampianina said, “The intent of this government is to organize an inclusive presidential election whose results have to be accepted by all”. He also added, “The new cabinet highlighted on “a victory for the country, for democracy because it proves that when the best interest of the Nation requires it, pride and partisan claims must be set aside,” Madagascar is the world’s biggest producer of vanilla and prices reached highs of $600 per kilograms for the first time last year. They are still around that level due to uncertainties over crop levels”.

Rajaonarimampianina did not say anything when the election was scheduled for this year that when it would take place. He also appointed Christian Ntsay, the local representative for the International Labour Organisation, as prime minister last week.

In May 2018, Rajaonarimampianina also approved the new law, removing that provision, and the Constitutional Court ordered him to dissolve his government and appoint a new prime minister with the support of all parties. But the crop is vulnerable as due to the damage from the cyclones that frequently hit the island.
